ESSIM 2012

European Summer School in Industrial Mathematics
and Modelling Week

August 12 -26, 2012
Technische Universität Dresden
Department of Mathematics

The ESSIM 2012 will bring together more than 70 students from the network of ECMI universities spread all over Europe. In about 13 small international teams, they will tackle real-world problems using their mathematical modelling expertise.

The event combines a
  • one-week summer school (Aug 13 - 19, 2012)
with lectures on modern mathematical methods relevant for solving problems in industry and trade with
  • one-week mathematical modelling (Aug 19 - 26, 2012)
    in small student teams.
Summer School - Modelling Week
The ECMI event takes place annually at one of the ECMI centres. It is a compulsory part of the
     European Masterprogramm in Industrial Mathematics
and is accredited with 3 ECTS points.

The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry  ( ECMI) is a network of European universities. It was founded in 1986, and its objective is to promote the use of mathematical models in industry and to train "industrial mathematicians" (i.e. graduates with the relevant modelling skills) in close cooperation with industry.

The Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) is funded by the European Union and supports education and training projects. One focus lies on intensive programmes like Summer Schools which provide compact training activities for students from all over Europe.
The EACEA under the LLP finances the development of the ECMI Master Programme in Industrial Mathematics (ECMIMIM) and the conference EMP-IM 2009.

ESSIM The European Summer School in Industrial Mathematics and Modelling Week is one of the intensive courses offered under the European Union's LLP (see above). 20 ECMI partner universities are involved, and the project is coordinated by the University of Milan.
