Smoothing and Iterations for Discontinuous Approximation

Discrete approximation problems with piecewise constant functions including free knots are treated via an embedding into a family of parameter dependent problems with smooth basis functions. The smoothed problems are treated after splitting of linear and nonlinear compents via QR-factorization and a Gauss-Newton technique, respectively. Convergence bounds are studied for the approximation of the original solution by solutions of the generated smoothed problems. Moreover, Gauss-Newton method is analyzed in dependence of the smoothing parameter.
